The other day I was procrastinating reading an article on Medium.com which stirred something inside me.
Still not sure what emotion to be honest- could be guilt, could be excitement, could be dread, could be fear..I honestly don’t know at this stage.
Let me explain.
I have 4 websites:
- One is in the home and garden niche.
- One is in the men’s health/grooming niche.
- One is this website.
- One is for my training company – prt-training.co.uk
My goal is to monetise the top 3.
To do that I need to write articles, blog posts, reviews, etc.
I know this. I’ve known this for years, and yet it’s still the hardest thing to do.
Currently, I’m making around $300 a month – 90% coming from the men’s health/grooming website.
This is not a lot.
However, I only have 43 posts on that site.
If I write more articles, I’ll make more money. That’s a given.
My articles are good and they take me a long time to write.
That’s probably why I don’t write many.
The thought of sitting down to write another epic article can be enough to prevent me from even starting.
Write Just 300 Words
Anyhoo, the article I was reading said that to be a better writer and to publish more, is to write and publish a 300-word article every day.
The idea behind it is it encourages you to actually write – simply because 300 words doesn’t take that long to knock out.
It also improves your writing skills, speed, grammar etc.
And finally, if you reach 300 words, then chances are you’ll end up writing a little more.
If It’s Good Enough For Seth
What really did it for me was when the author linked out to Seth Godin.
If you’re unfamiliar with Seth’s work, go check him out.
Among other things, he’s a marketing innovator and a real inspiration.
Seth regularly posts articles around 300 words or less.
His articles do not contain any crap or filler or waffle of any sort.
They hit the spot immediately.
This approach won’t work for every article.
Some articles will need much greater detail and research.
However..
It forces you to sit and write.
Even if the article isn’t great.
I may even be really shit.
No matter.
The idea is to keep at it and eventually you’ll get better, faster, stronger ..yea just better and faster really.
So that’s where I’m at.
Be prepared for some great really crap 300-word articles appearing here soon!
P.S. This article is now over 400 words long and I’ve only inhaled 6 times..
